Level I Trauma Center

At the Borgess Trauma Center, our Level I Trauma care includes the demonstration of leadership and total care for every aspect of injury, from prevention through the rehabilitation phase. The Trauma Center’s ultimate goal is re-integrating the injured person back into their community.

Important Trauma Facts
In the United States, unintentional injury is the most common cause of death for individuals aged 1 to 34 years. It is estimated that more than 60 billion injuries occur in the United States on an annual basis. The primary causes of unintentional injuries are; motor vehicle crashes (MVC), falls, ingestion, drowning, and burns. In the United States in 2001:

  • There were 5,129 deaths of children ages 1-4. Approximately 1,701 died of accidents, 605 of which were mvc related.

  • Between the ages of 5 – 14 years there were 31,962 deaths. Accidents made up 2,802 deaths with 1,635 of them from mvc.

  • For ages 15 – 24, there were 31,962 deaths, 13,871 of which were accident-related and 10,259 associated with mvc.

  • For ages 25 –44, there were 132,563 deaths, 26,138 of which were accident-related and 13,471 were from mvc.

The use of safety equipment has reduced the number and severity of injuries. Equipment such as seatbelts, airbags, and bicycle helmets have been instrumental in this reduction.
