24 Area Physicians Have Been Recognized for Exceptional Diabetes Care.
Affecting 14,000 people in Kalamazoo County alone, diabetes increases your chances of suffering from heart disease, stroke and even blindness. While diabetes is a chronic health condition, there’s good news. The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) and American Diabetes Association (ADA) have recognized 24 Borgess doctors for providing the highest level of diabetes care.
Care Based on Best Practices
In partnership with the ADA, NCQA established the Diabetes Physicians Recognition Program, which distinguishes physicians who use evidence-based measures and provide excellent care to their patients with diabetes. The Diabetes Physicians Recognition Program’s evidence-based measures cover areas such as:
- HbA1c control
- Blood pressure and low-density lipoprotein (LDL or “bad” cholesterol) management
- Eye examinations
- Nephropathy (kidney disease) assessment
- Smoking status and cessation advice or treatment
“I am pleased that we were able to reach this benchmark in clinical quality. Borgess Ambulatory Care is now distinguished as having the first practices and the only primary care practitioners in Kalamazoo County to reach this level of care,” said Ed Millermaier, MD, chief medical officer and chief operating officer, Borgess Ambulatory Care. “This recognition signifies our physicians are measurably among the best in the nation in care of patients with diabetes.”
