Borgess Critical Care Services
What is Borgess Critical Care Services?
Borgess Critical Care (BCCS) is a team of critical care physicians (intensivists) dedicated
to caring for critically ill patients in
southwest Michigan. We have specialized training and experience in providing care for critically
ill patients. We work in close collaboration with
Borgess Inpatient Services, as well as referring
and primary care physicians to provide continuity
of care throughout a patient’s hospitalization.
What is an Intensivist? An intensivist is specifically trained and certified in the care of critically ill patients. They devote
most of their professional time to the practice
of critical care medicine, and promote quality
care in the intensive care unit (ICU) and efficient
use of critical care resources. Intensivists are
also trained in and perform several critical
care procedures, including tracheal intubation,
mechanical ventilation, and placement of
intravascular catheters and monitoring devices.
How does the Critical Care Service function? An Intensivist directs the care of ICU patients by leading a team of healthcare professionals
in the delivery of care to critically ill or injured
patients. Intensivists participate in daily management
activities and are physically present in the
ICU, free of competing obligations.
Why does Borgess Medical Center have a Critical Care Service?
Critically ill patients benefit from doctors specialized in critical care medicine. Recent
studies have demonstrated that the sickest
patients have better outcomes when cared for
by intensivists. The Leapfrog Group (a special
organization working to improve the safety,
quality and affordability of health care for
Americans) recommends that hospitals
provide intensivist physician staffing for ICUs.
Intensivists at Borgess Medical Center are
available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
