A Closer Look at PT/OT/Speech Therapy

  • Physical Therapy—Physical therapy is a branch of rehabilitative medicine that utilizes specially designed exercises and equipment to help people regain or improve their physical abilities. Physical therapists focus on restoring motion by improving joint and muscle function, as well as decreasing pain. These specialists offer the care and support necessary to help patients achieve optimal health, whether it’s teaching an individual to walk correctly after a stroke or climb stairs free of pain following knee replacement.
  • Occupational Therapy—Occupational therapy’s focus is to enable people to participate in the activities of daily life. Occupational therapists evaluate areas of complaint, and analyze the physical, environmental, psychosocial and mental factors that may be contributing to each patient’s underlying problem. Problems treated can range from difficulty getting dressed after a stroke to needing a splint or treatment following a hand injury. Occupational therapy helps improve skill, mobility and strength, as well as offers creative solutions and resources for carrying out activities with less pain.
  • Speech-Language Therapy—Sometimes called speech-language pathology, speech therapy addresses communication difficulties and disorders, as well as swallowing ability. Speech-language therapists work with individuals to improve speech, language, difficulty swallowing and cognitive impairments after illness or injury. Some of the conditions treated by these professionals include stroke, developmental delay and head injuries. Partnering with patients and their families, speech therapists help restore lost abilities and implement alternative strategies for communication.

What You Should Expect

Regardless of the therapy you’re receiving, the success of your outcome will be dependent upon your active participation. Together, we will work with you—the most valuable member of your team—to help realize goals specific to your condition.

How to Dress

Please do not wear jeans or tight clothing to your therapy sessions. We recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing and shoes. If you’re participating in pool therapy, please bring comfortable swimwear.

What to Bring

Please bring the following items to your therapy appointment:

  • Picture ID
  • A doctor’s prescription referral form
  • Your insurance card
  • Calendar (to schedule your next appointment)

Minors

A parent/guardian should accompany all minors to appointments. Please keep in mind that our physical environment is designed to accommodate patient treatment only. We request that family members and friends wait in appropriate waiting areas, unless family/caregiver training has been indicated. For a reasonable fee, the Borgess Health & Fitness Center offers childcare services.
