"I woke up one morning and I couldn’t walk," said King, a 56-year-old former professional golfer and golf instructor. "I have no idea how I hurt my back. It was either a degenerative condition or an acute injury that I didn't notice."
Referred to Borgess Spine by her family physician, the long-time Pfizer employee who lives in Portage was examined by Dr. David Brockman and put under the care of Travis Jager, D.P.T., a doctor of physical therapy.
"I had never had surgery in my life and I didn't want it then," Sharon said. "After the first session with Travis I could feel an improvement. Physical therapy, manipulation, whatever he did it worked."
A native of Upstate New York, Sharon was a member of the Ladies Professional Golf Association for nine years and has been physically active all of her life. A scratch golfer at the time, she played with Nancy Lopez and other top-notch golfers during the 1970s and 1980s.
Trained as a teacher, she played and taught golf for many years and has continued her teaching in sales, marketing and related jobs with The Upjohn Co., Pharmacia and now Pfizer.
"I used to run five miles a day," she said. "And I knew all about strength training and conditioning. Travis, though, taught me how to focus on different core areas and that it takes more than one type of exercise for a strong back and to stay fit. I still do the exercises he taught me."
Sharon said that over the course of seven sessions her back pain disappeared. "I am extremely happy with Borgess Spine," she said. "I regained full capacity beginning from the time I walked in the door until I walked out the last time."
