Our Medical Team

The Borgess Bariatric Surgery program incorporates the expertise of a variety of professionals, including dietitians, behavioral medicine specialists and our bariatric surgeons:

Dr. Stuart R. Verseman, MD, FACS

Practicing with Borgess Surgical Specialties Dr. Stuart Verseman specializes in bariatric surgery, as well as general surgery. Raised in southern Illinois, Dr. Verseman received his medical degree from Rush Medical College in Chicago and completed his residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. In the U.S. Navy, he served as a surgeon on the USS Theodore Roosevelt. Prior to moving to Kalamazoo, Dr. Verseman practiced in the northwest Chicago suburbs for more than 10 years. Certified by the American Board of Surgery as a Diplomate, he is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, as well as a member of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery and the American Medical Association.

Terry Wortz, MD

Dr. Wortz graduated with his medical degree from Wayne State University and completed residency training in internal medicine from Michigan State University. Before joining Borgess Bariatrics, he served patients as an internal medicine specialist with Battle Creek Medical Associates. Dr. Wortz is a diplomat with the American Board of Obesity Medicine and American College of Physicians. He has special interest with weight-loss management.

Rebecca Blades, ANP

Rebecca received her diploma in Nursing from Western Michigan University, Bachelor of Science in Nursing from University of Phoenix and Master of Science in Nursing from Liberty University. She has certification of professional achievement in perioperative nursing, certified nurse of operating room (CNOR) and certified registered nurse first assistant (CRNFA). A certified bariatric nurse (CBN), Rebecca is a member of the Association of Operating Room Nurses, Registered Nurse First Assistant Specialty Assembly and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

Erika Steele, PA-C

Erika received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Hope College and a Master of Science in Medicine-Physician Assistant from Western Michigan University. She previously worked as a Physician Assistant with Hackley Hospital/Mercy Health Partners in Muskegon, as a health coach with Corporate Wellness Coaches in Grand Rapids and as a medical assistant with K.A.P.C. Pain Clinic in Kalamazoo.
