Do I Qualify?

Not everyone is a candidate for bariatric surgery.

Undergoing surgery to achieve weight loss is a serious decision. It’s not appropriate for everyone who wants to lose weight. In addition to healthy weight management, surgery is the first step to a variety of changes in your daily lifestyle.

Each patient must meet specific eligibility criteria.

The Borgess Bariatric Surgery Program carefully screens all candidates using a range of physical and psychological tests. The National Institute of Health (NIH) considers a person “obese” if he/she weighs 20 percent more than his/her ideal body weight. Other eligibility factors include:

  • Body mass index (BMI) between 35.0 and 39.0 with documented related health issues (co-morbidities) OR
  • BMI greater than 40 AND
  • Individuals aged 18-64 are considered regular candidates; individuals 16-18 or over 64 years of age are considered on a case-by-case basis
  • Documented, failed attempts at other medically managed weight-loss programs
  • A psychological exam to determine if the bariatric patient is mentally ready for the lifestyle changes required
  • Other studies, as indicated for each individual

This is not a ‘quick fix’, but a lifelong commitment.

Because all of the three bariatric surgery procedures performed at Borgess are considered major surgery — and because long-term success often involves factors beyond the scope of the surgery itself — candidates will be counseled and evaluated by an experienced team of professionals.

Patients should also be aware that, even with a successful procedure and great will power, some patients may not achieve their weight-loss goals — and that some patients may regain some of the lost weight over time. The amount of weight regain may vary by extent of obesity and type of surgery. Your doctor will discuss the specific details for the procedure you are considering.

We’re with you every step of the way.

The Borgess Bariatric Surgery Program has had a high level of success helping patients achieve their goals and stick with them over time. But you must be willing to commit to changing habits and having medical follow-up for the rest of your life.
