Our Medical Team

James Babel, MD, FACS

Dr. Babel was the first surgeon in Kalamazoo to perform a single-incision robotic cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal). Specializing in general and laparoscopic surgery, Dr. Babel has served area residents for more than 30 years. After graduating with his medical degree from Wayne State University, he completed his residency in general surgery through Southwest Michigan Area Health Education Center.

Daniel Barnas, MD, FACS

Dr. Barnas graduated from Northwestern University School of Medicine and completed a general surgery residency at Michigan State University Department of Surgery. He is Kalamazoo’s first fellowship-trained breast surgeon.

Maria House, MD, FACS

Dr. House is a board-certified colorectal and general surgeon. As a colorectal surgeon, Dr. House offers southwest Michigan residents a new, minimally invasive treatment option for hemorrhoids. She graduated from the Ohio State University College of Medicine and completed a general surgery residency at Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine. Following residency, she earned a fellowship in colorectal surgery at Baylor University Medical Center.

Richard Jefson, MD

Dr. Jefson specializes in general and laparoscopic surgery. He has been in private practice in Kalamazoo since 1977 and has been an active member of the medical staff at Borgess since 1978. Board certified by the American Board of Surgery, he is also currently on the medical staff in the Surgery and Endoscopy Center at Borgess at Woodbridge Hills. An associate clinical professor of surgery with the Western Michigan University School of Medicine, Dr. Jefson graduated from Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University.

Daniel Stewart, MD, FACS

Dr. Stewart has served as chief of surgery and chief of staff for Borgess Medical Center. He specializes in general, neck, breast, laparoscopic abdominal and bowel surgery. Dr. Stewart earned his medical degree from the American University of the Caribbean and completed residency training through Southwest Michigan Area Health Education Center.

Stuart Verseman, MD, FACS

Dr. Verseman is the area’s only board-certified bariatric surgeon. Since 2005, he has been the medical director of bariatric surgery at Borgess Medical Center. Dr. Verseman specializes in laparoscopic gastric bypass, gastric sleeve and laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding procedures. He earned his medical degree from Rush Medical College and completed his residency at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Verseman served in the United States Navy as a staff surgeon on the USS Theodore Roosevelt.
