The Borgess Bariatric Center program incorporates the expertise of a variety of professionals, including dieticians, behavioral medicine specialists and our bariatric surgeons:
Dr. Stuart R. Verseman, MD, FACS
Practicing with General and Bariatric Surgery, PC, Dr. Stuart Verseman specializes in bariatric surgery, as well as general surgery. Raised in southern Illinois, Dr. Verseman received his medical degree from Rush Medical College in Chicago and completed his residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. In the U.S. Navy, he served as a surgeon on the USS Theodore Roosevelt. Prior to moving to Kalamazoo, Dr. Verseman practiced in the northwest Chicago suburbs for more than 10 years. Certified by the American Board of Surgery as a Diplomate, he is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, as well as a member of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery and the American Medical Association.
Dr. Melissa H. Olken, MD, PhD.
Dr. Olken serves as medical director for both ProMed Internal Medicine and ProMed’s Weight Management Program. She has significant research and clinical experience in nutrition, exercise physiology, and bariatric medicine. Dr. Olken received her MD and PhD degrees while in the Medical Scholars Program at the University of Illinois @ Urbana. She was the recipient of a National Institute of Health Clinical Nutrition Fellowship. She is board certified in Internal Medicine, having completed her internship and residency at The University of Michigan Medical Center. She is a member of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians, The Obesity Society, and The American College of Physicians. Dr. Olken has been invited to give numerous presentations and has been involved in many publications, research projects, and committee/administrative services.
