For the third time, BMC has been certified as a Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission. Borgess became the first southwestern Michigan hospital to receive the certification in 2005. The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of ApprovalTM for a Primary Stroke Center is based on an onsite evaluation of stroke care capabilities and adherence to strict, evidence-based standards of care. Certification assures consumers and purchasers that the provider is committed to quality and safety excellence. Borgess Medical Center has been designated a Stroke Center of Excellence by NeuStrategy. The honor results from a comprehensive survey that covers programs, staff, technology and facilities. A Survey Report Card issued by the organization provides the results not only for the individual hospital being surveyed (in this case, BMC), but also for the average of all hospitals that have received the Stroke Center of Excellence designation. In all but one of the surveyed components, as well as in the total score, Borgess Medical Center was ahead of certified stroke centers nationwide. And in that one exception, there was no way BMC could be higher because our score tied the national stroke center average at 100%. Included among the survey components where Borgess excelled are: Clinical Programs, Research Programs, Medical Staff, Allied Health & Administrative Staff, Facility and Technology. The survey also covered areas related to business, including leadership and governance. Borgess exceeded (or tied at 100%) the national average in all of these components, as well. NeuStrategy, formerly called NeuroSource, is a healthcare rating organization that “represents some of the most respected neuroscience, oncology and orthopedic experts in the country.”

Borgess Medical Center has received its 2007-2010 accreditation as a Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) Chest Pain Center from the Society of Chest Pain Centers (SCPC). Accredited Chest Pain Centers offer high quality care for the patient with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) as a result of a collaborative effort among Emergency Medical Services, the Emergency & Trauma Center and Cardiology.

Borgess Spine has been designated a Spine Center of Excellence by the insurer Priority Health. When patients with back pain need care beyond what a primary care physician’s office provides, Priority Health requires that they go to a designated Spine Center of Excellence for timely, comprehensive, non-surgical medical evaluations. “These physiatrist-led multi-disciplinary Spine Centers of Excellence offer patients the best and most appropriate care,” according to a statement from Priority Health.

ProMed Healthcare, Governor's Award of Excellence, 2007
Borgess Family Medicine, Borgess Internal Medicine, ProMed Family Practice and ProMed Internal Medicine have received the prestigious 2006 Governor’s Award of Excellence for Improving Care in the Ambulatory Care Setting. The Governor presents this award in partnership with MPRO, Michigan’s Quality Improvement Organization (QIO). The award acknowledges excellence in health care quality and safety. The 2006 award marks the sixth year that the Governor and MPRO have honored physicians’ offices statewide. Award criterion aligns with the Physician Office Quality Improvement Program including the Doctor’s Office Quality-Information Technology (DOQ-IT). The DOQ-IT project promotes the adoption of electronic health record systems in small-to-medium sized physician offices. The clinical topics addressed by the Governor’s Award have been designated as national health care priorities by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Clinical areas of focus are individually selected from one of the following areas: preventive care, coronary artery disease, diabetes mellitus, heart failure, or cancer screening. Borgess Family Medicine, Borgess Internal Medicine, ProMed Family Practice, ProMed Internal Medicine selected Diabetes as its’ clinical area of focus. ProMed Healthcare, MDCH Immunization Level Recognition, 2007
The Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) has given awards to four ProMed Pediatric offices that have achieved 90% or higher immunization levels for their 2-year-old patients. The four offices are ProMed Pediatrics at Woodbridge with 93%, ProMed Pediatrics at Richland with 92%, ProMed Pediatrics at Westnedge with 91% and ProMed Family Practice at Three Rivers 93%. These providers have helped Kalamazoo County reach an overall 82% immunization level, as reflected in the Michigan Care Improvement Registry (MCIR).

For the sixth straight year, Borgess Health has been named to the list of Top 100 U.S. Integrated Healthcare Networks (IHN 100). The 10th annual IHN 100 is based on a ranking of 570 regional, nonspecialty health care systems, as compiled by Yardley, Pa.-based healthcare informatics company, Verispan. Each health care system was rated on their degree of integration, as well as their overall performance. Through an evaluation system composed of eight categories and 33 subcategories, Borgess Health was ranked on how well it operates as a unified organization. Categories measured in the ranking include: number of physicians and variety of specialty services offered, integrated technology, contractual capabilities, outpatient utilization, financial stability, services and access, hospital utilization and overall utilization.

Borgess Medical Center was named one of the nation's 100 Top Hospitals® for cardiovascular care by Solucient®, a Thomson healthcare business. The annual Solucient award for cardiovascular services objectively measures performance on key criteria at the nation's top performing acute-care hospitals. This is the third time Borgess Medical Center has been recognized with this honor. The 2006 Solucient 100 Top Hospitals: Cardiovascular Benchmarks for Success study appears in the Nov. 6 edition of Modern Healthcare magazine. As the nation's leading source of information products for the healthcare industry, Solucient provides tools and vital insights that healthcare managers use to improve the performance of their organizations. Solucient® scored facilities in eight key performance areas: risk-adjusted medical mortality, risk-adjusted surgical mortality, risk-adjusted complications, core measures score, percentage of CABG patients with internal mammary artery use, procedure volume, severity-adjusted average length of stay, and wage- and severity-adjusted average cost. Borgess Medical Center has been a cardiac leader for many decades. More than 16,000 heart surgeries have been performed and the Borgess cardiovascular laboratory is one of the most experienced and busiest in the Midwest. Borgess was one of the first in the United States to offer a free-standing cardiac rehabilitation program.
Borgess Medical Center, Neuroscience Center of Excellence Designation, 2006
Borgess Medical Center is among the nation’s top neuroscience programs, and designated as a Neuroscience Center of Excellence (COE), according to the 2006 Neuroscience Center of Excellence Survey, co-sponsored by NeuroSource, Inc., Chicago, IL and HealthTech, San Francisco, CA. The 2006 survey, the only one of its kind in the neurosciences, analyzed 150 neuroscience programs, across 41 states. A hospital’s overall performance is determined by measuring program progress in four key areas: Clinical and Research Programs, Staff, Facilities & Technology, and Business. 2006 marks the third annual year for the Neuroscience COE Survey. The annual assessment evaluated 150 hospital-based programs, and only 42% of those programs received sufficient scores to be recognized as a 2006 Neuroscience Center of Excellence.
Borgess Medical Center, CARF Stroke Specialty Program Accreditation and The Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval for Primary Stroke Center Certification, 2006
CARF, the US Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, has named Borgess Stroke Center one of the first 20 organizations to be accredited for Stroke Specialty Programs. In addition to being accredited by CARF for its stroke services, Borgess was also recently certified once again as a Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, receiving the Gold Seal of Approval. As one of its major stroke services, Borgess Medical Center offers rehabilitation services which was the basis for recognition by CARF. Borgess also offers the Borgess Stroke Clinic, which provides comprehensive follow-up care to discharged BMC stroke patients. Development of CARF Stroke Specialty Program standards was guided by an 18-member international advisory committee composed of persons who have sustained a stroke, in addition to professionals in many disciplines and settings where stroke services are provided. Before formalizing the standards, CARF sought and received comments from more than 400 stroke patients, family members and others involved in stroke care and support.
Borgess Medical Center, The Joint Commission certification for Heart Failure Program, 2006
Borgess Medical Center has earned a rare disease-specific certification from The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations for its Heart Failure Program. Only 19 other Heart Failure programs have been certified in the entire United States and BMC is the only recognized program in west Michigan. The commission concluded that Borgess' heart-care program follows national standards and guidelines determined to improve heart-patient care. The certification is effective for two years.

Borgess Medical Center has again earned several Michigan Peer Review Organization (MPRO) Governor’s Awards of Excellence. Awards for 2005 include improving care in the hospital setting for: Acute Myocardial Infarction, Heart Failure, Pneumonia, and Surgical Infection Prevention. Borgess Medical Center has also achieved the 2005 Governor’s Award for Improving Care in the Emergency Department Setting for Acute Myocardial Infarction. It is the third consecutive year that Borgess has received Governor’s Awards of Excellence. The Governor's Award of Excellence Ceremony took place on October 3, 2006 at the annual MPRO conference.

Borgess Medical Center has won the Marsha Ladenburger Award for Clinical Excellence from Ascension Health as a result of its Culture of Safety Discovery Days. The Culture of Safety program was designed to ensure ongoing commitment to patient safety by encouraging all associates to explore events that occur in hospitals every day--and to relate those events to their own experiences. The Marsha Ladenburger Award recognizes and encourages teamwork in the development and implementation of programs for improvements in care. The award was established to honor the contributions made by Ladenburger to Ascension Health and to the Daughters of Charity National Health System. From 1999 to 2001, Ladenburger served as Ascension Health Senior VP for Health Care Innovation and Evaluation.

Borgess Medical Center was recently honored with a prestigious Professional Service Award by the Gift of Life Foundation for enabling 100% of potential organ donors to become actual organ donors over a period of twelve consecutive months. The Gift of Life Foundation awards Michigan hospitals, elected officials and community members for outstanding support of organ and tissue donation. The award recipients share a common desire to save and enhance lives through organ, tissue and eye donation. Borgess Medical Center was one of only 12 Michigan hospitals to be recognized.

BMC earns H2E Partners for Change Award with multiple environmental initiatives, 2005
Borgess Medical Center has once again been recognized for its environmental protection efforts.
The H2E Partners for Change Award was given to BMC for making "significant and sustainable progress toward reducing waste, preventing pollution and eliminating mercury." H2E, or Hospitals for a Healthy Environment, is a joint program of the Environmental Protection Agency, the American Hospital Association, the American Nurses Association and Health Care Without Harm. Participation in the program, which seeks to reduce health costs as well as improve the environment, is voluntary.

Ascension Health Workplace Safety Survey, 2005
In 26 of 59 categories, Borgess Medical Center earned a Best in Class designation in the Ascension Health Commitment to Safety (ACTS) program. The Medical Center was being rated among approximately 60 Ascension Health health facilities. The ACTS designations were given as part of a process by Ascension Health to develop a "Best Practice" model for occupational health and safety programs.
Virtual Intensive Care Unit, 2004
Borgess Medical Center has opened a Virtual Intensive Care Unit (VICU), providing comprehensive electronic monitoring for each critical care patient and a separate staff following these patients from a remote location. Utilizing the technology, the VICU staff acts as an "extra pair of eyes" for trending key vital signs, lab data and drug interactions, as well as assisting bedside teams when decisions need to be made quickly.

For the 18th time, companies working with Borgess CorpFit have received Gold Healthy Workplace Award from the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sport. Workforce Innovation Loss-Prevention Strategies (WILS) Award, 2004
In March 2004, Borgess received the WILS Award from Ascension Health in recognition of their Worker’s Compensation Case Management Process. This process was developed to reduce rising medical and indemnity costs associated with work-related injuries and illnesses. The process also helped to decrease the number of lost and restricted workdays that result from work injury claims. The implementation of this process resulted in a decrease of lost workdays from 63 in 2003 to only four from January-May, 2004 and a reduction in restricted workdays from 1,143 in 2003 to 36 from January-May, 2004.

Borgess Medical Center was named one of the nation's 100 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals by Evanston, Illinois-based Solucient® in October 2003. The annual award objectively measures performance on key criteria at the nation’s top performing heart hospitals. Borgess Medical Center is the only facility in southwest Michigan to be honored with this award. Seven key measures are used to score facilities - risk-adjusted medical mortality; risk-adjusted surgical mortality; complications; percentage of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) patients with internal mammary artery (IMA) use; procedure volume; severity-adjusted average length of stay; and wage and severity-adjusted average cost.

Awards were presented to 15 leading US hospitals and healthcare systems at the Greystone.Net Client Conference held in San Diego in December 2003. Greystone.Net presented its First Annual Client Best-In-Class Awards, which included 17 categories showcasing the finest in hospital and healthcare system Web site content and functionality. Borgess won in the Visitor/Patient Information category.

In August 1999 the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons awarded Borgess Medical Center Level I Trauma verification. Borgess Medical Center was reverified in March 2003.

Hospitals for a Healthy Environment (H2E) recognized just 27 institutions across the nation in 2003 with their Partners for Change award. This award was given to facilities that have initiated waste minimization and pollution prevention programs that are – measurable, sustainable and contribute to the goals of H2E.
US Department of Veteran Affairs Award, 2003
The Borgess Navigation Center and its staff, as well as BHA Executive VP Pat Dyson, have received a Special Commendation from the US Department of Veteran Affairs (VA). The commendation is to recognize their contribution to the development of Navigation Centers in the VA. The recipients were cited for their exemplary commitment to sharing their local know-how that has assisted VA in achieving an innovative learning environment that promotes workforce development and organizational learning.
Making Medicine Mercury-Free Award, 2003
Borgess Medical Center was one of only 25 hospitals and other health care facilities in the nation to be awarded the H2E Making Medicine Mercury-Free Award. This award was received spring 2003. The H2E Award is sponsored by Hospitals for A Healthy Environment--a joint project created by the American Hospital Association, the Environmental Protection Agency, Health Care Without Harm and the American Nurses Association to implement the AHA - EPA memorandum of understanding.
Eden Alternative Facility – Borgess Nursing Home, 2003
The national registry of Eden Alternative facilities accepted Borgess Nursing Home as an Eden site in December 2003. The Eden Alternative is an innovative philosophy of long-term care. Eden facilities see long-term care as a habitat where people can continue to live and learn, rather than an institution for the frail and elderly.
Hospitals and Health Networks Most Wired Hospitals – The Innovator Awards, 2002
Borgess was selected as a finalist for providing patients and families with access to the Internet using a wireless keyboard and television screen instead of a computer monitor. Patients can surf the web, e-mail a loved one, and chat with physicians, all from the comfort of their bed.

Three of these awards were made as part of the Annual Most Wired Recognition. Borgess received recognition for this program: Access to electronic patient records was dramatically improved without adding expensive computer hardware by exporting patient information to physician-owned Palm Pilot/visor devices.
Top 100 Hospitals: Orthopedic Benchmarks for Success, 2000
In November 2000, Borgess Medical Center received recognition as one of the Top 100 Orthopedic Hospitals in the nation. This HCIA/SACHS study used Medicare data and compares the performance on four established technical procedures: total knee replacement; total hip replacement; partial hip replacement; and intertrochanteric fracture. Six clinical and financial measures were used to determine this award: risk-adjusted mortality rates; risk adjusted complication rates; count of unique patients receiving orthopedic services; Average length of stay at hospital, adjusted for illness; cost per patient, adjusted for illness severity and local wage differences; and percentage of patients who came from and were discharged from home. Borgess was one of 15 teaching hospitals with orthopedic residency programs recognized. Only one other in this category in MI (Spectrum) was also identified. Overall Borgess was one of only 10 MI hospitals that received this designation.
100 Most Wired Hospitals and Health Systems, 2000
Borgess Health was named one of the 100 Most Wired Health Systems, recognizing the BHA commitment to technology infrastructure in healthcare. This 2000 study examined 253 hospitals and health systems, rating six constituent groups and categories. BHA was one of six organizations in Michigan receiving this recognition.

In 1999 HCIA and The Health Network conducted a study of over 700 U.S. hospital cardiovascular programs. HCIA produced lists of the Top 100 programs in each of these classifications. Borgess Medical Center was one of only 34 hospitals nation-wide that made both lists.

Each year HCIA and The Health Network examine the most effective and efficient 6,000 acute and specialty hospitals in the U.S. This 1999 study is based on eight clinical and financial criteria (risk-adjusted mortality index, risk-adjusted complications index, severity-adjusted average length of stay, expense per adjusted discharge, financial margin, percentage of total patient revenue from outpatient revenue, index of total facility occupancy and productivity). Borgess Medical Center was one of only three teaching hospitals to be placed on this list for the Northeast Central region (Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and Wisconsin).
Top 100 Integrated Health Network, 1999
BHA was named one of the Top 100 Integrated Networks in a 1999 study performed by SMG Marketing Group, a Chicago based healthcare information company that tracks 532 health systems throughout the U.S. This study ranks health care systems based on the level of integration in nine categories including technology, hospital utilization, financial stability, services and access, contracts, physicians, outpatient utilization and overall system integration. BHA was one of five systems listed in Michigan.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) presented a Phoenix Award to Textile Systems, Inc. and the City of Kalamazoo for redevelopment of the Northside ‘brownfield’ on which TSI is now located. The EPA called the new TSI facility "a showcase sustainable brownfield redevelopment worthy of national recognition."
