Volunteer: Borgess Health Care at Home

One hour a week. Believe it or not, this short donation of time can make a profound difference in the lives of those we serve. As our volunteer, you will play an integral part in the mission of Borgess Visiting Nurse Association (VNA). Whether you’ve made the decision to volunteer directly with patients or offer your talents in a more behind-the-scenes role, you will help us sustain the health of our community.

Why Volunteer?
Volunteering is a gratifying experience—both professionally and personally. By choosing to volunteer you may gain:

  • Personal satisfaction and fulfillment, knowing you have made a difference in someone’s life
  • An opportunity to share your gifts and talents with others in need
  • Greater self-knowledge from our training program, as well as from relationships with patients and families
  • The ability to have fun, meet people and make new friends
  • A way to stay connected and involved after retirement
  • Reward from giving something back to your hometown

Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers are needed throughout our entire service area, which encompasses the counties of Allegan, Barry, Berrien, Calhoun, Cass, Kalamazoo, St. Joseph and Van Buren. Opportunities include:

  • Patient-Family Volunteers—To provide companionship, respite for family caregivers, errand running and other important support for individuals at home or in a long-term care facility
  • Bereavement Volunteers—To help grieving families of hospice patients through phone calls or assistance with support groups and related programs
  • Community Education Volunteers—To represent Borgess Visiting Nurses and Borgess Hospice at fairs, festivals and community events
  • Administrative Volunteers—To assist staff in a wide range of important duties, such as data entry, filing, copying and mailings
  • Expressive Arts Volunteers—To work alongside hospice patients who are participating in an array of creative activities—from journaling and music to painting and sculpting—as part of our Diane’s Way Expressive Arts Program

Volunteer Training and Flexibility
Along with offering you convenient hours to match your availability, Borgess VNA also provides training and ongoing education that will enable you to perform exceptionally as our volunteer. Should you ever have a concern or question while visiting a patient, we’re here to lend guidance—24 hours a day, seven days a week.
